Artist Statement
The illustrations I make take inspiration from fairy tales, nursery rhymes, and legends. My art takes on a narrative approach motivated by these stories I grew up consuming. More specifically, my art is inspired by the bittersweet and sentimental feeling I get when I look back on these tales that I can only describe as nostalgic.
I choose to tackle nostalgia specifically because of how it impacts my state of mind. Looking back on the past is something I often do. Having stories to look back on reminds me of where I came from, just as they continue to remind me of how they’ll always be there even as I get older.
Stylistically, I create art influenced by Art Nouveau artists such as Alfonse Mucha and Henri Privat-Livemont and contemporary Japanese artists such as Naoko Takeuchi and Tetsuya Nomura. I make frequent use of the intricate linework similar to what’s found in Art Nouveau. Also inspired by Art Nouveau are the borders I often use to envelope the overall composition. I often rely more on linework and color palettes for contrast rather than heavy amounts of shading. My contemporary influences help create the direction I take my figure illustrations in, following a more anime-styled influence. With these influences, I strive to construct art that is dreamy.
When it comes to how my pieces are created, they are often more digital than traditional. For digital media, I use a Samsung S6 Lite and Clip Studio Paint. Afterward, I transfer the artwork to my computer and then incorporate text into the piece via Adobe Illustrator. If I work traditionally, I make use of various types of multimedia paper. For my illustration medium, I use alcohol markers, India ink, and whatever watercolors I happen to get my hands on.
